The National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award is NSF’s most prestigious early career award, which encourages faculty to consider how their research, education, and broader impacts goals can be launched and integrated throughout their careers. This workshop will explore the nuts and bolts of how individual researchers can develop a plan for connecting their science to broader societal impacts and align the plan’s activities with the NSF’s vision for Education and Broader Impacts.
Participants will be guided in the use of an “Impacts Identity” framework to design an innovative and plausible broader impacts plan that can be integrated into existing or new areas of research and education. We will utilize a constructivist approach where individuals will clarify strategic impact opportunities that are most relevant to them and chart a concrete pathway towards realizing those opportunities over the course of the 5-year NSF CAREER award. Following this workshop participants should be ready to begin identifying existing assets, needed resources, and potential partners to achieve their broader impacts goals. One-on-one project design support will be available to all participants throughout the proposal development process.
Please read the 2021 NSF CAREER guidelines, available here, before the session. Proposals are due July 26, 2021. You will receive a calendar invite with the Zoom call details a few days before the workshop.
