Giardiasis

Zoonotic Concern

Cause: Giardia lamblia intestinalis

Occurrence in Animals: Most mammals, especially young ones

Source in Animals: Feces, even without diarrhea

Exposure: Accidental ingestion, both directly and indirectly through contaminated objects

Symptoms:

  • ANIMALS:
    • Usually without symptoms, possible diarrhea
  • HUMANS:
    • Possible diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, weight loss; often without symptoms.

Precautions:

  • WASH HANDS¬†after handling animals and their environment
  • Avoid hand-to-mouth contact
  • Use gloves to handle feces or animals with diarrhea
  • Wear gloves, safety goggles and face mask when cleaning contaminated areas
