Salmonellosis

ZOONOTIC CONCERN

Cause: Salmonella spp.

Occurrence in Animals: Most animals (birds, mammals, reptiles)

Source in Animals: Feces

Exposure: Accidental ingestion, both directly and indirectly through contaminated objects

Symptoms:

  • ANIMALS:
    • Diarrhea or asymptomatic, with intermittent shedding of bacteria in either case
  • HUMANS:
    • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

Precautions:

  • Good personal hygiene:
    • WASH HANDS¬†after handling animals and their environment
    • No eating, no drinking, no smoking around the animals
  • Avoid hand-to-mouth contact
  • Use gloves to handle animals with diarrhea
  • Wear gloves, safety goggles and face mask when cleaning contaminated areas
