Potential U.S. Federal Government Shutdown: Research Continuity Guidance

Compliance, Ethics, Safety

Cornell has multiple research services programs that support the university's commitment to ethical research that is compliant with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines.

For all Researchers

Specific Research Areas

  • Live vertebrate animals. The use of animals for research, teaching, or testing is subject to Cornell Policy 1.4, and NY State and Federal laws and regulations. You and personnel working with you must complete Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) training. An approved IACUC protocol is required. The IACUC Office, the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE), and collaborating units will help you administer and manage your animal work.
  • Human participants. Federal regulations and Cornell policies apply to research involving human participants. The Cornell Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews and approves human participant research protocols. Learn more about the IRB protocol submission and approval process.
  • Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules or other biohazardous materials. All researchers must obtain approval from the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) for activities with recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules (r/sNA) or biohazardous materials. Submit a Memorandum of Understanding and Agreement (MUA). Research at Biosafety Level -3 requires a separate application.
  • Research safety. Get help managing risks associated with your research and meeting regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Export Controls. The Export Control Office can assist with international shipments, provide guidance on sanctions, and advise on the handling of export controlled technology and material on Cornell's campus.
